Drug prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
History: Daiichi Sankyo’s Benicar was approved for use by the FDA in 2002 to treat high blood pressure. In 2013 the FDA added a warning that Benicar could cause intestinal issues such as sprue-like enteropathy. This side effect causes the villi to flatten making the absorption of food difficult. This a medication induced symptom.
In 2017 Daiichi Sankyo agreed to a settlement for around $300 million for all cases if 95% of claimant’s opt-in to the settlement. The claims were the manufacturer did not adequately warn the public about the numerous side effect caused by the drug Benicar and that they knew or should have known about the injuries. There are still around 2,000 cases pending in multi-district litigation pending.
